Your Aftercare Questions, Answered

Frequently asked questions

What's actually in Blue Moon Ritual Balm?

Beef tallow, shea butter, beeswax, jojoba, calendula, manuka honey, frankincense, vitamin E, and methylene blue. No petroleum, no synthetic fillers — every ingredient is chosen to work with your skin's natural chemistry, not sit on top of it.

How do I use the balm?

Wash gently with unscented soap and pat the area dry. Apply a thin layer 2–3 times a day for 5–7 days, or as your artist advises. A little goes a long way you're feeding the skin, not sealing it.

Why avoid petroleum-based products like Vaseline?

Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and what you apply to it matters. That’s why we chose a nourishing, tallow-based formula instead of petroleum-based ingredients.

Many conventional tattoo aftercare products rely on petroleum-derived ingredients, which are refined from fossil fuels and create an occlusive barrier on the skin. We believe in using ingredients that are more closely aligned with nature and work in harmony with your skin.

Our tallow-based formula is designed to support your skin’s natural moisture barrier while providing the hydration and care your tattoo deserves throughout the healing journey.

When should I start applying balm after getting tattooed?

Follow your artist's specific wrap instructions first. Most wraps stay on for the first 24 hours, and some artists prefer 1–4 days depending on the tattoo. Once the wrap is off and the area is washed and dried, that's when a thin layer of balm comes in.

How often should I wash a healing tattoo?

Twice a day is the standard. For example, once in the morning and once at night. Use a small amount of mild, unscented soap, work in a circular motion to gently clear away plasma or fluid, then pat dry (never rub) before reapplying balm.

Are there things I should avoid while my tattoo heals?

Yes, steer clear of direct sun exposure, swimming, tight or rough clothing, scented lotions, alcohol, harsh soaps, and picking or scratching at the tattoo. All of these can slow healing or affect how the ink settles.

Is this balm right for sensitive skin?

Because it's free of petroleum and synthetic fragrance, many people with sensitive skin find it gentler than traditional aftercare products. As always, if you have known allergies to any of the listed ingredients, check with your artist or a doctor first.
